Pictured here is a boot from the 2012 Ecco Boots range. It’s possible to spend considerable amounts of money and still find yourself with a pair of shoes that will fall apart or damage your feet within days. When you know what to look for, it’s possible to find shoes that are fashionable and that you can wear for Listed here are some of the factors that you might like to consider. It is worth bearing in mind that special activities, like sports or hiking, often require specific design elements that can sometimes differ from general-purpose use. All types of Ecco Shoes are available online and these are excellent quality shoes.

To begin with, it is said that a good shoe controls the foot, not the other way round. Structurally, feet are very complex and require specific kinds of support to avoid injury-causing stretches, bends, and twists. Proper shoe design provides comfortable support that holds your foot and keeps it in proper alignment whether moving or standing still.

Shoes need to bend easily with your toes, but they will also firmly support the heel and arch. That’s the job of two pieces: the heel counter and the shank.

Most people would be well served by long heel counters, the support that reaches from the heel to the arch. A long heel counter is one of the main reasons an athletic style shoe feels comfortable. The heel counter can be judged by feeling the firmness of the actual cup of the heel. This is the part of the shoe that cradles your heel. It should be firm, but not stiff. Put a thumb in the center of the counter at the back of the shoe and push forward. It should flex with minimal force.

Often made from steel, the shank is built into the sole of the shoe beneath your arch and supports it. This also adds durability to the support. Depending on the material used, shoes without a shank tend to break down over time, resulting in decreasing arch support.

The choice of materials in construction are also very important. For example, leather is best for uppers and linings. It naturally wicks moisture away from your foot and it breathes, allowing moisture to evaporate. This makes a healthier, more comfortable in-shoe environment.

Displayed here is a sandal from the spring Ecco Sandals range. The construction of the shoe is also important. (Put your hand in the shoe to feel for any rough edges that might rub against your foot. Look at the stitching and check that it is even and tight. Check to see that the soles and heels can be replaced and the whole shoe refurbished for extended life. When you find a pair of shoes you love, the last thing you want is to have no option but to throw them away when parts start to wear out.

Wicker is often made from plant material, such as willow, but can also be made from synthetic material such as plastic. Wicker is formed by weaving fibres and is commonly used in picnic basket and furniture. The woven wicker is usually attached to a frame made from a more rigid material.

The most commonly used plant material used in wicker products is willow, bamboo, rattan and reeds. The wicker is woven from the flexible stems of the plants, but the core stems of the plants can be used as the rigid structure to which the wicker is fixed.

Wicker products are light, sturdy and attractive, which makes it an ideal material for furniture and baskets. Wicker furniture can be used outside as it is able to withstand most weather, although some wicker is should be protected from the elements. Synthetic wicker is becoming increasingly popular for use outdoors as it requires very little maintenance.

The use of wicker as a material for furniture can be dated back as far as ancient Egypt. Wicker is believed to be one of the first natural materials used in the manufacture of furniture, having initially been used to produce baskets. The oldest known wicker furniture was revealed by archaeologists in 1990 while working to uncover the civilisations of the Pharaohs.

The popularity of wicker furniture has spread from Egypt to Rome and throughout Europe as international sea traders carried wicker products to Great Britain, Portugal, and Spain. Its popularity has continued throughout the entire world, with the main manufacturing taking place in China and surrounding countries.

The light and sturdy nature of wicker makes it ideal for the manufacture of picnic sets or picnic hamper basket. Hampers are often filled with seasonal food products and sold as corporate gifts. Wicker can also be used for log baskets as it is strong enough to hold logs. Wicker laundry baskets are also very practical and low maintenance.

Are you a follower of fashion or a follower of brands? If you follow Ecco, you are probably both. Some people look at the new shoes that come to market every season and pick the pair or pairs they like the look of the most. Others are loyal to one brand of shoe and will only look at that manufacturers shoe range for the new season. This ‘brand loyalty’ is something that every manufacturer or brand strive for. It makes good economical sense as it results in repeat sales to existing customers and that can only be good for year end profits. It’s also fair to state that a manufacturer that has a loyal customer base, also has a customer base that will be a tremendous help in promoting the brand, as most loyal customers like to tell their friends and family about things they have purchased and like. There is no better form of marketing than Word of mouth as it is inexpensive and highly effective. Recommendations from friends and family have far greater impact than traditional advertisements!

So how do manufacturers build a loyal customer base and which brand should you follow? The manufacturer will normally have a USP or Unique Selling Point, something that distinguishes the brand from other products on the market. Ecco have a reputation for comfort and quality and this has resulted in a very loyal customer base. Other manufacturers concentrate on image and some are focused on low price. If we look at what the shoe is designed to do, i.e. protect the feet and look good, you can’t go wrong in a pair of Ecco shoes or Ecco Boots or Ecco Sandals with so many styles to choose from, but all manufactured with quality materials and with comfort as a top priority. You will also hear reports about customer service. It is important to know that you will be looked after is you have a problem with your shoes.

Rattan is the name given to species of palms in the tribe Calameae, approximately 600 in number, native to tropical regions of Africa, Asia and Australasia. It’s difficult to imagine this ending up as wicker baskets.

Structure

Most rattans differ from most palms in having thin stems, 2–5 cm diameter, with long bare stems between the leaves. Ratans are not trees but are vine-like, growing over and around other plants and trees. Rattans are also superficially similar to bamboo. Unlike bamboo, rattan stems are solid, and the majority of Rattans are not self supporting and cannot stand on their own. However, some genera are similar to typical palms, with stouter, erect trunks. Several rattans grow spines which act as hooks to aid climbing over other plants, and to deter herbivores. Rattans have been known to grow up to hundreds of metres long. Approximately 70% of the world’s rattan population exist in Indonesia, distributed among Borneo, Sulawesi, Sumbawa islands. The rest of the world’s supply comes from the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Bangladesh.

Processing

In forests where rattan grows, its commercial value can be more attractive to loggers than harvesting timber, preventing de-forestation. Rattan is not as dissicult to harvest, does not require advanced tooling and can be transported more cheaply. It also grows much faster than most tropical wood. This makes it a valuable tool in forest maintenance, since it provides a profitable harvest that supports rather than replaces trees. It is yet unknown whether rattan can be as profitable or useful as the alternatives.

Furniture making is the main end use of rattan. It is also used to produce Wicker Laundry Baskets. The various species of rattan range from several millimetres up to 5–7 cm in diameter. From a strand of rattan, the skin is usually peeled off, to be used as rattan weaving material. The remaining “core” of the rattan can be used for various purposes in furniture making. Rattan is a very good material and is lightweight, durable and flexible. This also makes it ideal for storage containers like wicker storage.
